Network Effects: Social Media and the Past, Present, and Future of Addictive AI
The rise of AI is intertwined with social media's massive data collection, addictive algorithms, and Silicon Valley's influence. With big tech companies dominating AI development, the potential for addictive AI systems and the spread of AI-generated misinformation on social media poses ethical and societal challenges. Collaboration between stakeholders is vital to ensure responsible AI deployment.

Design Refine Create: A Framework for GenAI Curriculum Design
For the past few weeks, I've been exploring ways that educators can take back control of generative artificial intelligence. As part of curriculum design, I started with reflections on how I use multimodal generative AI myself when designing my blogs on education and resources.
Then, I took a brief side step into EdTech application design to experiment with ways educators can build their own AI assistants. Last week, I finished up with a critique of both edtech lesson planning and education […]
We recommend servers block these instances because they are known bad actors, where we have seen direct evidence of extreme levels of bigotry, harassment, and pedophilia.
While you should look into every list you import, and I definitely encourage anyone importing this to skim the list and pay attention to the given reasons, I do not encourage going to the instances in question, as many contain illegal content such as terrorism and #CSAM.
I release this list in the hopes of helping servers which are new or have less moderator-time get the known-offender instances off their timelines, especially ones which continually appear on the #FediBlock and #InstanceBlock tags. - #TechHub#Moderation
I was drawing a fan suggestion of the character Storm from X-Men and made a cute little doodle of her, which eventually turned into chibi Storm. Enjoy!
This is Storm, from X-men, stuck in a vent after having chased a student (Jubilee) – This was a fun one because it had a little bit of a story. This got my comic book juices flowing so it’s gotten me started on coming up with a couple of short comic pages.
Thanks to my deviant followers for the great suggestion.
Educators continue to grapple with the ethical and practical implications of Generative AI, but it has proven valuable in enhancing teaching methods and student engagement. LLMs like ChatGPT can aid in visualising abstract concepts, refining editing skills, and providing constructive feedback, presenting numerous opportunities for its integration in education.
Reminder that this list is representative of instances where we have seen EXTREME behavior, beyond a single account: racial slurs, pedophilia, terrorism, CSAM, etc.
This list is not exhaustive: it is everything WE have seen direct cases of behavior we would block over, and we try to block sparingly. Instances may have slipped through the cracks. Not being on this list is not an endorsement.
This list is NEW. If anyone sees anything on this list that they feel was inappropriate, feel free to tell me, and I will go recheck it.
The Semiotics of Synthetic Media: Production and Meaning in Digital Plastic
Lately I've been digging in to the metaphor of Generative AI content as "digital plastic". I first wrote about it back in 2023 in this article, where I defined the media as a "mass produced, synthetic form of data that like its physical counterpart doesn't degrade much over time" and likened it to the way physical plastic has left its mark on the geological record, suggesting that AI-generated content could leave a similar "layer" in the digital […]
Content warning:Block Reccomendations: The TechHub Public Block List, 190+ instances we block or limit
I've been working on this for a few months now. I want to take more time on it before I say it's truly ready, but some of the things on the #FediBlock and #InstanceBlock tags lately have made me decide to rush this out now: I'm seeing people talk about servers we've had blocked for over a year now, where #admins harass minorities, promote terrorism, and trade #CSAM.
I'm convinced this needs to be available sooner rather than later.
This is a #blocklist from an older, block-averse instance, with servers we've seen absolutely unacceptable content from over the years.
I encourage you to look over the reasons before you import, but be warned, many of these have CSAM and/or terrorism on the main timeline.
I'm throwing down a challenge to edtech developers to create products that actually enhance teaching and learning, rather than relying on superficial AI "special sauce".
In this post I demonstrate building a simple AI chatbot, showing the ease of development and the need for genuine innovation in education technology. The code for the chatbot, with additional features, is provided for anyone to replicate and refine.
To follow an account in the directory, copy-paste its address into your search box on Mastodon etc, this will bring up its profile where you can click "follow".
To find out more about an account in the directory, just click on its address and this will open its page on its home server.
More Practical Strategies for GenAI in Education: Part 2
Educators continue to grapple with the ethical and practical implications of Generative AI, but it has proven valuable in enhancing teaching methods and student engagement.

Practical AI Strategies Free 4-Week Course: Feedback and FAQ
Just over a month ago I launched a free 4-week email course on Practical AI Strategies for educators. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with over 700 participants completing the first round. Participants commented on the value of the bite-sized lessons and the practical approach, and many provided feedback along the way.
In this short post, I'm going to give a summary of the key points and frequently asked questions based on participant feedback.
What participants found […]
More Practical Strategies for GenAI in Education: Part 1
In January 2023, I wrote a post titled Practical Strategies for ChatGPT in Education. At the time, ChatGPT had just been released, and educators were grappling with its implications. The post outlined six strategies where ChatGPT could be used: planning, refreshing, improvising, personalising, collaborating, and communicating. It quickly became one of the most trafficked parts of my site (along with the Teaching AI Ethics series) and has since turned into a webinar, a face-to-face […]
AI Metaphors We Live By: The Language of Artificial Intelligence
In "Metaphors We Live By," Lakoff and Johnson emphasise that metaphors are fundamental to human thought and language, not just decorative language. In this post, I've examined my own use of metaphors to describe AI and analysed their implications, highlighting the power and limitations of these metaphors in shaping our understanding of AI and its impact.
Digital Plastic: Understanding AI-Generated Synthetic Media
What is Digital Plastic?
Last year, I wrote an article introducing the concept of digital plastic, coining the term to describe AI-generated synthetic media, which, like its real-world counterpart, can be both helpful and harmful. Lately, I've been revisiting the term amidst ongoing discussions around quickly developing technologies like video generation. In this post, I'm going to update and refine my earlier definition and offer up a few more examples of why I think AI-generated media […]

I am not sure if the "original idea of information sharing" is what I am trying to develop in my circle of influence, but compared to what we see nowadays on YouTube, TikTok, LinkedIn and other networks, is quite different (and often anoyingly boring).
SHARING for me is not:
uploading a file to a hidden folder in a cloud storage (even if […]
About a month ago, I stopped using almost all of my social media (with the exception of Instagram). It’s been an interesting month and I still have mixed feelings about it.
I’ve been using Twitter since around 2008, so I’ve been there since its early days. I stopped using Twitter actively a little bit before it was acquired by the Muskrat, and once that happened, I deactivated my account […]
Generative AI, including ChatGPT, has impacted education. It now incorporates image recognition, text-to-speech, and code generation. Three levels for using GenAI in education are outlined in this post: Basic Prompts, Adding Context (including file uploads), and Custom Chatbots and Projects. The goal is to enhance, not replace, human expertise in teaching. Approach AI-generated content critically.
Fedify is an #ActivityPub server framework in #TypeScript & #JavaScript. It aims to eliminate the complexity and redundant boilerplate code when building a federated server app, so that you can focus on your business logic and user experience.
The key features it provides currently are:

This online course, "Introduction to Generative AI in Education," equips educators with foundational knowledge of generative AI and its practical use in the classroom. Participants explore technical concepts, ethical considerations, practical applications, and global perspectives. The course focuses on integrating AI into educational settings, addressing bias, and understanding its impact on student wellbeing.
Introducing #Hollo. Hollo is an #ActivityPub-enabled single-user microblogging software. Although it's for a single user, it also supports creating and running multiple accounts for different topics.
It's headless, meaning you can use existing #Mastodon client apps instead, with its Mastodon-compatible APIs. It has most feature parity with Mastodon. Two big differences with Mastodon is that you can use #Markdown in the content of your posts and you can quote another post.
We are building the Game of Trees Hub, a #Git repository hosting service based on #gameoftrees and #OpenBSD, funded via an open collective.
Our Git repository server implementation can already be self-hosted on OpenBSD and Linux, but:
1) Not everyone can or wants to self-host.
2) Most people don't need yet another Git hosting service, though some people might appreciate a financially transparent and independent service that supports both public and private repositories, has no intentions of abusing user data, and is not striving for infinite growth.
3) Ever since the Game of Trees project started as a side project in 2017 it has received zero financial support. And with developers growing up and having families with children to support, unpaid work on Game of Trees has been eating its way into working hours. Which is not sustainable in the long term.
Can we make a win-win situation out of this dilemma?
For now, this is an early-bird crowd-funding effort to support the initial work on getting the service up and running. Git repository service tiers will appear once the hosting infrastructure is ready. The more initial funds we can collect the faster we will get there.
All software developed will be released under the ISC license, the same open source license terms as used by OpenBSD.
Racist, Robotic, and Random: More Thoughts on Generative AI Grading
There has been a surge in discussions on using generative AI for assessment and grading, sparking polarised views on its potential biases and impacts. Research and personal experiments have revealed concerns about AI's capability and fairness in grading, particularly in regards to racial bias. The black box nature of AI poses challenges, and while it offers efficiency, it may not accommodate diverse student needs.
The education system is often deemed broken, but in reality, it is working as designed. While technology may claim to "revolutionize education", it often fails to address societal and cultural shifts impacting education. Technological solutions, like Microsoft's "add sparkle" feature, demonstrate a lack of understanding and respect for educators. True progress lies in supporting educators and leveraging technology to enhance their capabilities, not replace them.

How Artificial Intelligence Can Catch Up With Pedagogy
I'm calling bullshit on the idea that pedagogy needs to catch up with AI. As an educator who uses AI, I know firsthand its profound limitations. Technologists' view of education is condescending and contemptuous. AI companies need to spend time in classrooms and update themselves on modern pedagogy.
Imagine a stranger spreads lies about you. They tell everyone you're doing horrible stuff, the worst crimes imaginable. They make videos, articles, livestreams, all pushing the same lies designed to make everyone hate and fear you.
Would you "just block them"?
What happens when other people don't block them? When other people believe them, follow them, share their lies?
What if this turns into real life abuse? If someone attacks you or your family?
This is what vulnerable minorities face because of badly-moderated social media:

Generative AI might finally kill off homework, and it’s about time
I've taught across a range of subjects and year levels for over fifteen years, and I've always been a bit dismissive when it comes to homework. It probably goes back to my own days as a student, when I did everything in my power to avoid doing work outside of school. Back then, I surreptitiously finished my homework in other classes (finishing my Maths in English, my English in Art, and my Art while sitting out PE because I'd "forgotten my shorts" again). But if I were a student now, I'd […]

Created this after reading conversation in comments below some tech article somewhere. Someone mentioned "surfing the #internet sewer" and I really liked that phrase.
What happens when a Canadian and a British lad get together to review cars? Well, this channel called Throttle House happens. Creative, funny yet very entertaining while informative is their content. The fun and creative intros alone are worth watching while the comprehensive reviews are helpful. For the car enthusiast, this is a must.
Not much wow in car wow, but if you want quick-witted funny commentary while drag racing crazy cars, then this is for you. It’s a fly bye the seat of your pants ride as these cars rip through the quarter mile. The reviews are honest, fun, and informative. They crank out a log of content and review a ton of cars. Check it out if you are a car nut.

Fun with #PHP: creating a plugin to enable better diagnostics, accessible remotely via an API to enable debugging.
Improving OJS discussions, notifications, and editorial workflow. Provide more context to editors and make it easier for non-technical editors.
Improving the experience for journals using open-review. Provide more gradients of control for how open-review works for each journal.
Porting in further language/translation and accessibility improvements, especially for plugins
Fixing/Updating Documentation: taking a more task based approach to how OJS/etc. works instead of making people read through a whole thing about the whole workflow for something.
More documentation: integrating progress from previous sprints including for newly created plugins.

Critic, creator, consumer: A framework for using (or being used by) GenAI
In the past 18 months, multimodal generative AI has become increasingly ubiquitous, influencing the way many create and interact with content across various domains, including text, image, audio, and video. While generative AI doesn't "democratise creativity", it will impact upon many creative and academic areas. As these technologies continue to advance and permeate our daily lives, it is important to develop frameworks that help us understand how people engage with and are affected by […]
Ok, everyone, here's the big news regarding my #Twitch channel: I've come to a point in my life where I'm financially stable, so I don't need any income from Twitch anymore. During my break, I've decided that I want to keep on streaming, as it brings a lot of joy to my life. I also don't want to unaffiliate the channel, as this means that there won't be emotes and channel points anymore.
This means that from now on, I'll be donating all Twitch income to local animal welfare projects (like the shelter in my area or the cat aid programme). I also plan on doing charity streams again, with the first one coming in May or June.
I'd like to thank all of you who have supported me in the past, present, and future. Together, we can make the world a little bit less bad 💚

Applying Generative AI like ChatGPT and Copilot to brainstorming is one of the most touted uses, and there are plenty of situations where the technology is well-suited to idea generation. At the same time, it's not always a great idea to offload the creative process to GenAI. In this post, I'll explore a few different ways to use AI for idea generation, and also suggest when it might be best to do things the old fashioned way.
Why might it be better to avoid AI?

C'è un'aura di mito e di mistero attorno all'idea di Intelligenza Artificiale, in parte dovuta all'ovvia ignoranza tecnologica ma in larga parte dovuta al marketing aggressivo di chi la sviluppa o agli allarmism...
Interesting draft proposal and discussion on this thread. I do like the idea of coordinating some of the existing Mastodon forks into a common starting point -- whether that becomes a new hard or soft upstream, or a 15th standard. I'll need to read through more of this and think about it.
I still think interoperability between different Fediverse platforms for different use cases and so forth is even more important, but that's something that can be done with or without a hard fork, so it's effectively a separate discussion.
