"President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil is outraged.

President Trump is trying to push around his nation of 200 million, dangling 50 percent tariffs as a threat, Mr. Lula said in an interview. And yet, he added, the U.S. president is ignoring his government’s offers to talk.

“Be sure that we are treating this with the utmost seriousness. But seriousness does not require subservience,” the Brazilian president said. “I treat everyone with great respect. But I want to be treated with respect.”

Mr. Lula granted his first interview to The New York Times in 13 years on Tuesday, in part because he wanted to speak to the American people about his frustration with Mr. Trump.

Mr. Trump has said that, starting on Friday, he plans to impose 50 percent tariffs on Brazilian goods, in large part because Brazilian authorities have charged former President Jair Bolsonaro with trying to hold on to power after losing the 2022 election.

Mr. Trump has called the case a “witch hunt” and wants it dropped. Mr. Lula said that was not up for negotiation. “Maybe he doesn’t know that here in Brazil, the judiciary is independent,” he said.

In the interview, Mr. Lula said that the American president is infringing on Brazil’s sovereignty."

"The rule of law presupposes that there are, well, rules. These rules are supposed to provide a consistent, repeatable, and, most important, knowable set of outcomes. Predictability is the key feature of a functioning rules-based system, because people have to know the rules—and the consequences of breaking them—before they act. The difference between living under the rule or law and living by the whims of a madman is that the rights, responsibilities, prohibitions, and privileges of your situation do not change radically every time a person in power throws a hissy fit.

But the Supreme Court has decided that rules and laws do not apply to Trump, and they don’t protect anybody from Trump. That means that the rule of law is functionally dead in this country (which shouldn’t be entirely surprising, given that this country almost never respects the rule of law in other countries). Nobody can know if the rights they have today will be the rights they have tomorrow. Nobody can know if a thing that is illegal for the government to do to them today will be illegal for the government to do to them tomorrow.

We see the truth of this country’s descent into lawlessness every single day. All you have to do is pick up a newspaper, turn on the television, or go to Trump’s social media account. Nearly every “news” story you’ll see falls into one of two categories: Trump did something, or Trump threatens to do something. Nobody can reliably say whether those actions or threats are “legal” because everybody knows (whether they will admit that to you are not) that rules and laws no longer apply to the Trump regime."

TTIP per Handschlag? Ein Papier der US-Regierung zeigt, dass die USA den Zolldeal anders auslegen als die EU. Massive Zugeständnisse an US-Konzerne auf Kosten von EU-Verbraucher-& Umweltstandards – das müssen wir verhindern!

Die USA reklamieren eine Interpretation, die stark an das gescheiterte TTIP-Abkommen erinnert. Dem US-Papier nach will Washington weitreichende Ausnahmen von EU-Regeln etwa bei Lebensmitteln durchsetzen. Produkte, die nicht EU-Standards entsprechen, könnten künftig hier verkauft werden.

Völlig unklar ist, wer bei dem Deal mitreden darf. Die Verhandlungen waren sehr intransparent. Wir fordern eine umfassende demokratische Kontrolle durch das EU-Parlament und die Mitgliedstaaten. Dazu gehört auch die Prüfung, ob dieser Deal rechtswidrig ist.

Europa darf sich nicht erpressen lassen. Bestätigt sich die US-Auslegung , müssen wir den Deal stoppen. Sonst droht eine schleichende Aushöhlung unserer Gesetze – und damit unserer Demokratie.
