Go to this YouTube channel: Kino Lorber, click Playlists and then view the Free Documentaries (80 feature-length films) or the Free Movies on Demand playlist (145 films.) Kino Lorber is an international film distribution company; I thought it was a person when I first heard mention of this.

Now try this experiment: Pick a documentary (try Filmworker if you know who Stanley Kubrick is, M.C. Escher: Journey to Infinity if you have eyes, or Hieronymus Bosch: Touched by the Devil if painting is more your thing.) Watch the movie. Then reflect on the experience of watching a feature–length documentary, versus say, modern “serial” shows. I’ve relearned just how bad modern entertainment can be, when I reminded myself just how good film can be. (Surprise bonus-round: Watch The Atomic Café and be gobsmacked, horrified, and… some-other-feeling-I-can’t-quite-find-the-right-word-for in repeated cycles.)

Note the article does not go into detail about how to obtain the data to create the properly formatted blocked_domains.csv files which you can upload. Some of us are working towards providing collated versions of these files but the basic method is to start out copying the listed 'evil domains' from instances which do publish "Moderated Servers". There is a bit of work involved in converting these into pure blocked_domains.csv format but here is one example...scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "Moderated Servers".

NOTE: Some instances with use aster***iks to obscure the full URL of the listed domains, or at least on certain of the listed domains. Sometimes you can extrapolate. It is possible that the block would work on all domains that fit that URL description with the asteriks acting as 'wild cards'. That would be cool but we will have to ask someone who runs a Mastodon domain how that works.

I am a bit hesitant to personally publish block lists because it would not reflect the personal philosophy of the recipients and would probably attract a lot of animosity from the owners of specific domains who don't think their domains should be blocked.

You can also find out ideas of domains fit for blocking by going onto the hashtags for #admin and #fediblock and #abuse

2022 war kein gutes Jahr für Facebook bzw. Meta.

Um zu diesem Schluss zu kommen, brauchen wir uns nur den Aktienkurs anzuschauen, der von 340 US-Dollar auf ein Tief von 88 Dollar im November gefallen ist. Das Geschäft mit der Werbung lief dieses Jahr lausig. Schuld daran ist nicht nur die Inflation und die schlechte Stimmung bei den Konsumenten.

Auch die strengeren Datenschutzregeln bei Apple haben in diesem Jahr durchgeschlagen. Wir erinnern uns: Apple hat mit iOS 14 die Tracking-Transparenz-Initiative umgesetzt und in den Einstellungen bei Datenschutz & Sicherheit > Tracking die Option Apps erlauben, Tracking anzufordern eingeführt. Die können wir generell abschalten. Falls wir das Tracking zulassen, dürfen wir pro App bestimmen, ob sie persönliche Daten sammeln darf oder nicht.

«Meta gewinnt am Ende des Jahres an Glaubwürdigkeit»

Das führte dazu, dass in diesem Jahr der Gewinn und die Marge rückläufig waren, woraufhin Mark Zuckerberg auf die Weise reagiert hat, wie grosse Konzerne in solchen Fällen immer reagieren: Sie führen knallhart Entlassungen durch. Bei Meta wurde anfangs November eine gewaltige Zahl von Leuten auf die Strasse gestellt. Dafür gab es Lob bei der Wirtschaftspresse. Die «Handelszeitung» etwa schreibt:

Mit der überraschenden Entlassung von 11’000 Mitarbeitern zeigt Meta Konsequenz in der Kostenbewirtschaftung und gewann wieder an Glaubwürdigkeit.

Nicht bei mir, würde ich anmerken. Jedenfalls findet der Autor dieses Beitrags, der schwache Aktienkurs sei gar nicht so schlimm und Meta womöglich unterbewertet. Vor allem auf Instagram ruhen seine Erwartungen: Die Bedeutung der ehemaligen Foto-Plattform steigt noch immer und dürfte inzwischen die Hälfte des Gesamtumsatzes ausmachen. Und bei den Videos, den Reels, sei noch mehr herauszuholen, findet die «Handelszeitung».

Soweit die Finanzen, die mich nur bedingt interessieren. Worum es hier zentral gehen soll, ist die Innovation. Und da stehen bei Meta zwei Dinge im Raum:

Wer hat Angst vor Tiktok? (Der Mark hat Angst vor Tiktok)

Erstens die radikale Vertiktokisierung von Instagram und Facebook. Ich stehe der kritisch gegenüber: Meta scheint kein soziales Medium mehr sein zu wollen. Daraus folgt eine Entmündigung von uns Nutzerinnen und Nutzern. Aus Sicht des Konzerns zeigt es, dass die Kernidee, die Vernetzung der Menschheit, kein hohes Ideal, sondern bloss Mittel zum Zweck war. Und der Zweck ist, natürlich, Geld zu verdienen. Wobei, kleine Randbemerkung, mir scheint, Meta hätte dieser Umbau der Plattformen aufs Jahresende gebremst oder womöglich sogar zurückgefahren. Das könnte man positiv werten, aber auch als Zeichen nehmen, dass Mark Zuckerberg völlig ratlos ist.

Trotzdem haben wir gesehen, dass Meta einen als Bedrohung wahrgenommenen Konkurrenten entweder aufkauft oder ohne jede Scham kopiert. Ich will das nicht moralisch werten. Wir sollten uns aber für die Zukunft merken, dass Mark Zuckerberg kein Innovator ist und wohl auch nie einer sein wird. Für mich ist Instagram in diesem Jahr endgültig gestorben. Wenn es euch auch so geht, können deswegen ein Tränchen verdrücken. Aber wir sollten uns keine Illusionen darüber machen, dass es so kommen musste.

Also, mit der Feststellung, dass Mark Zuckerberg nicht von grossen Visionen, sondern von der Freude an Macht und Geld getrieben wird, wenden wir uns dem zweiten Elefanten im Raum zu.

Hey Mark, was macht das Metaversum?

Das ist das Metaversum, das Mark Zuckerberg Ende 2021 ausgerufen hat. Von diesem Metaversum war dieses Jahr noch nicht viel zu spüren – ausser in meiner Inbox, wo die Pressemeldungen einlaufen. Dort gab es andauernd Ankündigungen, dass diese oder jene Klitsche sich eine Präsenz im Metaversum geleistet hat. Nur ein Beispiel:

Die Zahl der Modemarken, die sich in die Welt des Metaverse, Web3 und der virtuellen Markenerlebnisse wagen, nimmt ständig zu. Ezgi Cinar, eine Visionärin und der Zeit immer einen Schritt voraus, definiert mit ihrer ersten Kollektion auf Vivents den zeitgenössischen Glamour und die Codes der modernen Begehrlichkeit neu.

Der Banause, der ich bin, hat sich bei der Lektüre dieses Mails gefragt, ob man Cynar nicht mit Y schreibt. Ich habe meinen Irrtum aber zum Glück schnell erkannt. Übrigens, es scheint mir kein Zufall, dass in diesem E-Mail auch ein zweites Buzzword nicht fehlt. Mal sehen, ob ihr es entdeckt:

In Zusammenarbeit mit Vivents, dem sozialen Marktplatz für Kunst, Luxus und NFTs, schliessen sich die Marken zusammen, um neue Territorien zu erschließen und die begehrtesten Verkäufer und Käufer von heute und morgen zusammenzubringen.

Klar, NFTs, mit denen wir im Nerdfunk im letzten Jahr stinkreich geworden sind. Im Vergleich zum Metaversum sind die immerhin schon eine Realität.

Was Meta als Einpeitscher der Metaversums-Revolution angeht, gab es 2022 kleine Fortschritte. Mark Zuckerberg hat es geschafft, Avatare mit Beine auszustatten. Microsoft ist nun ein Metaversums-Partner. Ausserdem hat der Konzern Ende Oktober die Meta Quest Pro lanciert, eine Virtual-Reality-Brille, wie man sie fürs Metaversum benötigt.

Ich hatte sie noch nicht selbst auf dem Kopf, sodass ich mir keine Meinung bilden kann. Aber wenn ich mir die ellenlange Besprechung vom «The Verge» zu Gemüte führe, dann erkenne ich ein technisches Spielzeug, das meilenweit von jeder Praxistauglichkeit entfernt ist: Teuer ist sie, die Brille, schwer und so technoid, dass ich mir bei fast keinem Menschen aus meinem Umfeld vorstellen kann, dass sie es ernsthaft in Erwägung ziehen würden, so ein Ding in ihrem Alltag zu nutzen¹.

Fazit: In diesem Jahr hat sich Meta von seinem Ursprung als Socia-Media-Unternehmen entfernt und ist dem hehren Ziel der Dominanz in der virtuellen Sphäre nicht entscheidend nähergekommen. 2022 war für Mark Zuckerberg ein verlorenes Jahr². Und wenn wir noch einmal auf die wirtschaftliche Seite zurückkommen dürfen: Mark Zuckerberg hat bei der Ankündigung des Metaversums «10’000 Jobs in Europa» versprochen – stattdessen sind jetzt 11’000 Jobs weltweit gestrichen worden. Wenn dieses Minus von 21’000 Arbeitsstellen aufgeholt ist, können wir ernsthaft weiterreden.

“Archiving Your Tweets at Archive.Org” for Dummies

[UPDATE: As of May 26, 2025, I don’t think the instructions on this page work anymore, because I believe Twitter/X has blocked archive.org from archiving tweets.]

I’m all done with Twitter, but I also didn’t want to just delete my account and remove over a decade of content that I created from the internet. I’m not so arrogant as to believe that anyone’s ever going to want to look at my tweets again, but (a) maybe I will want to link to one of my historical tweets at some point in the future when talking about something else online, and (b) I’m worried about the historical record that Twitter represents and the fact that if it disappears a great source for future historical research will be lost.

For all these reasons, I decided that before deleting all of my tweets and locking my account, I was going to archive my tweets at archive.org using the instructions they provide. Unfortunately, I found those instructions to be somewhat vague, and furthermore I discovered that they didn’t archive all of my tweets the first time around and I had to resubmit some of them a second time. I’ve put together this blog posting to give people more detailed instructions for how to archive your tweets successfully.

Step 1: Ask archive.org to generate a list of potential archive URLs for you

1. Ask Twitter for an export of all your data as described here.
2. Twitter will notify you when the archive is available. It could take days.
3. Once Twitter notifies you, download the archive using the instructions they provide and save it to your computer.
4. Unzip the archive locally, or if you don’t want to unpack the whole thing, extract the file data/tweets.js from it.
5. Go to https://archive.org/, sign up for an account if you don’t already have one, and log in.
6. Go to https://archive.org/services/wayback-gsheets/archive-your-tweets, put your twitter handle into the text box, select the previously extracted tweets.js file for upload, and click the “Upload” button.
7. Wait a while for it to process the uploaded file and give you a CSV to download. Save the CSV file locally.

Step 2: Filter out the bad URLs so archive.org doesn’t have to do work trying to archive them

Here is where my instructions start to diverge from the ones provided by archive.org. Some of the URLs in the list that archive.org gave you are no longer valid. It will help archive.org archive your tweets faster, and reduce unnecessary load on its servers, if you get rid of those URLs before submitting the list to archive.org. You can use this script to do that:

Save this script to your computer, e.g., as wayback-check.py, make sure you have the Python 3 requests module installed, and run something like python3 wayback-check.py --fetch twitter-urls.csv > filtered-urls.csv to generate a new file called filtered-urls.csv with the URLs that archive.org shouldn’t attempt to archive filtered out.

Step 3: Create a Google Sheet for archive.org to read URLs from

We’re now back on the standard archive.org instructions track.

1. Go to Google Sheets.
2. Create a blank sheet.
3. Select File -> Import.
4. Click the Upload tab and select the CSV file produced by the script.
5. Leave the default import settings and click “Import data”.

Step 4: Submit the list of URLs to archive.org for archiving

1. Go to https://archive.org/services/wayback-gsheets/.
2. Click the “Sign in with Google” button and sign in.
3. Click the “Archive URLs” button.
4. Past the URL of the Google Sheet you created above into the “Google Spreadsheet URL” text box.
5. It’s up to you whether to check the four checkboxes that are unchecked by default. Personally, I checked all of them. (Though “Save results in a new Sheet” didn’t seem to work.)
6. Leave the other options unmodified to be nice to archive.org.
7. Click the “Archive” button to start the archiving process.

You don’t need to leave this web page open; the archiving process will continue to run even if you close it. Archive.org will eventually sent you an email telling you that it has started processing your request with a link for monitoring the status of the request. This email won’t come right away, but it will come. Once it comes, you’ll also be able to see the status of the job at the above wayback-gsheets URL (after logging into Google again).

While the archiving process is running the progress may jump around, i.e., sometimes the number of URLs and percentage completed may go down instead of up. Furthermore, the number of errors reported may jump around as well. I have no idea why this is. In fact, while one of my archive jobs was running for some reason it “cloned” itself and there were two jobs listed with the same status URL. I have no idea why this happened but it didn’t seem to hurt anything.

Eventually archive.org will send you another email telling you that the archiving job is finished. This could take days.

Step 5: After the archiving is finished, check which URLs need to be submitted again

As I mentioned above, I don’t know why, but not all of my tweets were successfully archived on the first pass, so they needed to be submitted again. I wanted to submit just the missing URLs rather than all of them, to minimize the load on archive.org and also minimize the amount of time for the second archiving run. Fortunately the script above will help with this.

1. Wait until you get the email from archive.org telling you the archiving job is finished, then wait another ten hours to give archive.org time to add all the archived URLs to the Wayback Machine’s index.
2. Run the script on the output of the last run, e.g., like this: python3 wayback-check.py --check-archive filters-urls.csv > filtered-urls2.csv . The newly created CSV will list URLs that still aren’t archived in archive.org.
3. Repeat “Step 3” through “Step 5” of these instructions—each time you repeat “Step 5” start with the CSV file that was created the last time you did “Step 5″—until there are no URLs left to archive, or until the list is small and looks like it’s composed only of weird URLs that archive.org is probably unable to archive for whatever reason.

Once the list of remaining URLs is small enough, you can go to archive.org and search the Wayback Machine for individual URLs that are still missing to add them one by one. Note, however, that the “Send me email when done” option there doesn’t seem to work, i.e., the email never seems to arrive, so you’ll have to just wait a while and then search for the URLs again to confirm that they’ve been added.

When you’re all done you can delete all the Google Sheets.

Okay, so let me tell you about my doorbell, from a #networking perspective.

When you push the button by the door, it sends a message over the #zigbee wireless mesh network in my house. It probably goes through a few hops, getting relayed along the way by the various Zigbee light switches and "smart outlets" I have.

Once it makes it to my utility closet, it's received by a Zigbee-to-USB dongle, through a USB hub (a simple tree network) plugged into an SFF PC. From there, it gets fed into zigbee2mqtt, which, as the name implies, publishes it to my local #mqtt broker.

The mqtt broker is in the small #kubernetes cluster of #raspberrypi nodes I run in my utility closet. To get in (via a couple of #ethernet switch hops), it goes through #metallb, which is basically a proxy-ARP type service that advertises the IP address for the mqtt endpoint to the rest of my network, then passes the traffic to the appropriate container via a #linux veth device.

I have #HomeAssistant, running in the same Kubernetes cluster, subscribed to these events. Within Kubernetes, the message goes through the CNI plugin that I use, #flannel. If the message has to pass between hosts, Flannel encapsulates it in VXLAN, so that it can be directed to the correct veth on the destination host.

Because I like #NodeRed for automation tasks more than HomeAssistant, your press of the doorbell takes another hop within the Kubernetes cluster (via a REST call) so that NodeRed can decide whether it's within the time of day I want the doorbell to ring, etc. If we're all good, NodeRed publishes an mqtt message (more VXLANs, veths, etc.)

(Oh and it also sends a notification to my phone, which means another trip through the HomeAssistant container, and leaving my home network involves another soup of acronyms including VLANs, PoE, QoS, PPPoE, NAT or IPv6, DoH, and GPON. And maybe it goes over 5G depending on where my phone is.)

Of course something's got to actually make the "ding dong" sound, and that's another Raspberry Pi that sits on top of my grandmother clock. So to get *there* the message hops through a couple Ethernet switches and my home WiFi, where it gets received by a little custom daemon I wrote that plays the sound via an attached #HiFiBerry board. Oh but wait! We're not quite done with networking, because the sound gets played through PulseAudio, which is done through a UNIX domain socket.

SO ANYWAY, that's why my doorbell rarely works and why you've been standing outside in the snow for five minutes.

As a large, populous, and important country, India was high-pri at FB. The company agreed pretty quickly to take them down.

They took out 4/5. We found the 5th IT cell was ran by MP Vinod Sonkar (BJP - Kaushambi), the LS Chair of Ethics; the company went silent and refused to act (5/?)

So i guess an #introduction is the thing to do. I'm a software developer with heavy focus on Java, i work at https://atexxi.ch which i co-founded, using https://strolch.li on a #RaspberryPi to communicate with our servers to try and lessen nurses burden on drug logistics.

I am Bi man from the Seattle area and #TwitterRefugee hoping to explore many of my interests here on Mastodon. For the near future I am just going to lurk and learn while I RTFM so I can learn to use Mastodon as well as see how the culture develops.

The reason I state I am Bi man at the beginning of this post is to help raise awareness of the #Bisexual community which is often misrepresented in the media and news. Obviously #Bisexuality and #LGBTQ issues and news are interests I will follow and contribute to here on Mastodon.

Born in 1962 in rural southwest NYS, studied computer science in college, worked 1984-2009 for a big company, came to #RTP NC in 1997. I've been doing contract work lately and these days am deep into #Python, #Docker, #Ansible, #Packer, #Linux, #Jenkins, etc in what's essentially a long-term contract.

Outside work, I love music/concerts (#prog, #indierock, etc), some tv/movies, #cats, #kayaking (calm lakes), #puzzles.

Wie dumm kann man sein? Elon Musk: «Ja!»

Seit einer Woche ist die Twitter-Übernahme durch und der neue Chef führt sich auf wie die sprichwörtliche Axt im Wald. Das war angesichts der Vorgeschichte nicht anders zu erwarten, aber dennoch finde ich es verblüffend, dass Musk grad gar keinen Zweifel daran lässt, dass er ein Chef ist, wie man sich in seinen düstersten Träumen nicht wünscht: Öffentlich zu verkünden, dass Leute gefeuert werden, die eine (sehr knappe) Deadline nicht einhalten, ist ein starkes Stück.

Bei «The Verge» werden die Umstände so geschildert:

Twitter plant derzeit, dass das neue Twitter Blue-Abonnement 20 US-Dollar kosten soll. Gemäss dem aktuellen Stand der Dinge hätten verifizierte Nutzer neunzig Tage Zeit, um das Abo abzuschliessen oder ihr blaues Häkchen zu verlieren. Den Mitarbeitern, die an dem Projekt arbeiten, wurde am Sonntag mitgeteilt, dass diese Neuerung bis zum 7. November stehen müsse, ansonsten sie entlassen würden.

Auch viele Twitter-Nutzer sind sauer

Und damit sind wir beim zweiten Punkt: Musk hat es geschafft, mit dieser Änderung auch viele Twitter-Nutzer gegen sich aufzubringen. Einer der prominentesten Kritiker der Idee ist Stephen King, der sich die zwanzig Dollar wahrlich leisten könnte: Er schrieb: «Scheiss drauf, die sollen mich bezahlen. Wenn das eingeführt wird, bin ich weg wie Enron.»

Die Antwort von Musk darauf war in etwa das Dümmste, was man Stephen King hätte entgegnen können: «Wir müssen die Rechnungen zahlen. Wie wärs mit acht Dollar?»

Nein, dumm ist das falsche Wort: Entlarvend. Diese Entgegnung zeigt, dass Musk etwas Grundsätzliches nicht verstanden hat: Er hält das blaue Häkchen für ein Statussymbol. Das ist es für manche vielleicht, aber im Kern geht es darum, dass das Häkchen Sicherheit bieten soll, weil es bestätigt, dass wir es mit der echten Person und nicht mit einem Hochstapler zu tun haben. Falls Musk Twitter tatsächlich «warm und einladend für alle» sein soll, dann muss er die Verifizierung nicht zu einem Bezahl-Feature machen, sondern kostenlos massiv ausweiten.

Elon braucht Geld

Natürlich geht es darum, dass sich Musk bei seiner Übernahme massiv verschuldet hat und jetzt neue Geldquellen erschliessen muss, damit er überhaupt mit einer schwarzen Null aus der Sache herauskommt. Es ist wiederum Stephen King, der das glasklar auf den Punkt bringt:

Musk lässt mich an Tom Sawyer denken, der zur Strafe einen Zaun streichen muss. Tom überredet seine Freunde, die Arbeit für ihn zu erledigen, und lässt sie für dieses Privileg bezahlen. Das ist es, was Musk mit Twitter machen will. Nein, nein, nein.

An dieser Stelle tut sich ein zweiter Schauplatz auf: Mastodon. Das ist diese Twitter-Alternative, die es seit Jahren gibt. Ich habe sie vor vier Jahren hier im Blog vorgestellt, sie dann selbst aber nicht mehr gross benutzt. Doch im Mai, als die Querelen um Musk und Twitter losgingen, war sie plötzlich wieder im Gespräch – und nicht nur das: Es kam auch tatsächlich Leben auf die Plattform.

Allerdings ebbte dieser Enthusiasmus wieder ab, während die Übernahme in der Schwebe hing. Doch jetzt scheint es, als ob Musk ihr einen weiteren – und vielleicht den entscheidenden – Schub verpasst. Denn die Wachstumsrate, die ich seit gestern gesehen habe, ist eindrücklich.

Zwei neue Mastodon-Instanzen für die Schweiz

Ein wesentlicher Faktor ist die neue Instanz swiss-talk.net, die es seit gestern gibt. Für die hat der umtriebige Reda el Arbi (Das grosse Twitterer-Assessment, Folge 1: @redder66) auf Twitter Wind gemacht, und ihr zu einem guten Start verholfen.

Ich bin gespannt, ob der Elan anhält. Entscheidend wird sein, ob Elon weiterhin als wirkmächtiger, wenn auch unabsichtlicher Förderer von Mastodon auftritt. Ich habe mir jedenfalls erlaubt, meine Einstiegshilfe zu Mastodon mit einem Hinweis auf swiss-talk.net zu ergänzen – und auch auf swiss.social.

Spannend wird auch sein zu sehen, wie nachhaltig Musk dieses ganze Theater schadet. Mir scheint, der Ruf des genialen Entrepreneurs ist damit jetzt endgültig dahin.
