ok can someone explain to me how being able to see

is considered "functional and nuanced reply controls" (as someone on fedi described it)
when users I've blocked can't even see my posts or interact with me
AND
I can't even see the posts of, or interact with, users who've blocked me
in the first place?

why is the "show anyway" option even necessary?
I feel like it just places "user autonomy" ideals over actual safety and respect

I've seen a significant increase in bot account applications this past week, most of which are pretty obvious from their bland generic signup reasons.
Then today I got two applications which used the bio text copied directly from existing users as the signup reason. There were still tells in each application that gave them away, but they were more convincing in general.
Moderating signups just got much more annoying...

#spammers are getting more creative. they realised an LLM-generated "reason to join" doesn't work, so now they're seemingly stealing people's bios (talking about your profile pic and pinned post doesn't make sense in "reason to join", and saying you're a horny guy from the UK doesn't make sense in a not-against-horniness-but-still-generalist *Hebrew* speaking server).
oh and the email domains are disposable. the IPs might be too but I'm redacting just in case.

There is a "hacker" group (script kiddies) targeting Mastodon sites that are not yet running Mastodon 4.5.10.
Version 4.5.10 fixes several security vulnerabilities that are relatively easy to exploit and were discovered in earlier versions of Mastodon.
If you're not running 4.5.10 (or newer), you are at risk. ⚠️
If you're using a nightly build of Mastodon, make sure you're running one that was released after the release date of 4.5.10. And yes, I said release date, not version number — earlier 4.6 nightly builds do not include the security patch. ⚠️
If you're delaying the update because you're running a modified version of Mastodon, consider whether maintaining those modifications is worth the security risk. ⚠️

I finally solved a storage issue on #mastodon servers, which use self hosted S3 buckets: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/18774#issuecomment-4563829719
@fairkom 's instance fairmove.net has grown to 4.4 TB of bucket size and now was shrinking to 260 GB after applying a retention rule of 30 days directly on the minio server. As we have plenty of bucket space, I extended the cache now again to 180 days for a better scrolling experience. Yes, Mastodon also has retention rules, but they do not work for object storage.
